------------------
Shame is a social feeling, evoked by going against a social norm or perceived expectation, even secretly. It leaves a deep sense of rejection and alienation that feels deserved and often merges into an already existing self-perception.
Shame is different from guilt, though they can both be present at the same time.
Recurring, deep shame is different from normal shame and is a silent partner in self-defeating behaviors and associated with other issues such as perfectionism, narcissistic rage, avoidance, and anxiety.
Shame is transmissible through certain parenting styles, parents' own unresolved issues, and projection.
This easy to read post describes the difference between normal and toxic shame, why shame is worse than guilt, and how shame is transmitted and its effects.
